Why Caribbean Marine Surveyors

We are professionally qualified with SAMS and IIMS and UK Certifying Authorities. There are four surveyors in our office which is based in Nanny Cay Boat Yard and Marina in Tortola BVI. As we all work out of the same office, we share advice, discuss problems found, share reports between us for scrutiny etc. Also if the vessel is in Tortola, it is easy to get a second opinion on any issue. In order to maintain our qualifications we have to complete 60 Education Credits every 5 years. We also have to attend one week long course within the five years. In 2023 three of us went to the SAMS Conference in Montreal. Last Year two of us went to the Mariners Club conference in Ft Lauderdale. This year three of us went the the Mariners Club conference and the Ft Lauderdale Boat Show. It has become easier to stay current on new developments within the boating industry, using distance learning and we all are ABYC members. We regularly participate in ABYC education programs. Hot topics at the moment are Lithium batteries, electric motors, solar power etc.

We also have a vast range of knowledge in the office. One surveyor is from a fiberglass boatbuilding background. One is from a Tall Ship and wooden boat background. One is from a Corporate Shipbuilding and Charter Boat Skipper background. I am from a sailing family, my father built me an 8′ sailing boat when I was four years old and I had my first capsize at the age of 5 years. This was obviously before the age of fiberglass boats! The main thing that makes the office work is that we respect each persons areas of expertise and we all love messing about in boats.
