What is the difference between an insurance and purchase survey

Some surveyors charge less for a survey for insurance than for a survey for purchase. They do a faster, less thorough survey for insurance. We believe that this approach is wrong. Our survey for insurance is just as detailed for both surveys. Our reasoning is that we want you, the user of the boat to be safe on the water. We do not cut corners to save the owner some money. Safety afloat is the main reason why you should get a survey. We look at the boat with a different set of eyes from an owner / purchaser. Our focus is on whether the boat will catch fire, sink, dismast etc. All our surveyors are well trained, members of SAMS and other Surveying associations. For example many boat owners do not realise that there is an expiry date on flexible LPG gas hoses which does vary by manufacturer from 5 to 6 years. This is a safety issue as leaking gas is a explosive situation. One difference between the two surveys is that we try to advise future boat owners of possible future expenses. An example might be with a boat that has built-in steel tankage. For insurance we might report that – There is minor corrosion at the lower seams but no leaks seen. We recommend that the diesel tanks are monitored on a regular basis. For a Purchase survey we might report that –There is minor corrosion at the lower seams but no leaks seen. The tanks may leak in the next several years and replacing them will be difficult as they are built-in under the cabin sole.
