The Tonnage Measurement Survey is quite different from a Condition Survey or Insurance Survey..
The Tonnage Survey is carried out by a complicated series of measurements which are used to evaluate the internal volume of the hull and deck structure. The tonnage is used by the Port Authorities to levee harbour fees etc.
Before you request a Tonnage Survey, you should contact the port where you want the vessel to be registered and confirm that the name is available. We can then carry out the survey.
The survey can usually be carried out afloat, provided there is access to the hull interior throughout. In some instances you may be asked to provide plans of the vessel or, in rare cases, to haul the vessel.

The survey for Transport Canada will probably take about 4 hours for a 50' boat. We then retire to the computer to work out the formula. You do not get a copy of the form. We send the forms, photographs, drawings of the plan view, end and side elevations to Transport Canada. If your boat is 12 meters LOA or less, you can do the measurement yourself with a simplified format.
The British Tonnage for vessels up to 24 meters (78.9") load line length (measure from the deck at the bow, where the deck meets the stem to the rudder post) will take about one hour on board.
OUR FEES
This may vary with the size of the vessel but for a normal vessel less than 25 tons Transport Canada tonnage we charge US$800.00 plus US$50 for courier. For British Tonnage, we charge US$400.00 plus GBP75.00 (approx US$150.00). For work outside of the BVI, please contact us for a quote.
