Osmosis Evaluation

The first photo is of a 43’ trawler with severe, 4 to 6 inch blisters. The hull bottom was delaminated in many places as the resin had partly dissolved.
The second photo is of a 40’ sloop with tiny blisters about ½” or less. The blisters were almost impossible to see after the hull bottom had dried out for three days.

Osmosis can affect the value of your vessel. These are 4' to 6' blisters on a 1990 motor yacht. The repair cost approximately $10,000.00. Small blisters are difficult to see and can be mistaken for paint blisters, which are of no structural concern.

We can provide a detailed assessment of the osmosis to a vessel.
We use a Tramex or a GRP 33 moisture meter to provide the technical measurements and we are able to produce a report which will be acceptable to the vessel's manufacturer for a warranty claim. We regularly work with boat manufacturers on osmosis claims.

To give you some rough guide lines - an osmosis repair in the Caribbean is likely to take about 3 to 4 months drying period after the bottom has been pealed. A 45' vessel is likely to cost in the region of US$9,000.00. We charge US$140.00 per hour. The initial assessment will be about 2 hours followed by periodic checks every two to three weeks to monitor the drying. The checks will only take about 15 minutes and will probably add a further two hours to the total time.
